Chubby Checker Helps NYC Fight – The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) and Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) are joining forces & teaming up with rock legend Chubby Checker to raise awareness about the super dangerous practice of “dooring” – you know, when someone opens their car door without checking for cyclists first?

Dance Your Way to Safety with the New York Twist

This catchy PSA features Chubby Checker’s iconic 1961 song, “Let’s Twist Again,” and shows an easy move New Yorkers can do to make sure they see any cyclists coming their way. It’s all about using your far hand to grab the door handle, which makes you automatically turn and look back. Genius, right?

Chubby Checker says, “New York City, let’s twist again on four wheels! Groove your way through the city and join me in the campaign to support safety by doing the New York Twist every time you exit a vehicle.”

Saving Lives One Twist at a Time

Deputy Mayor of Operations Meera Joshi explains, “Dooring is a serious and dangerous problem in our city, and doing the New York Twist is the solution.” By making the PSA fun and using Chubby Checker’s super catchy song, people are more likely to remember the Twist and actually do it when getting out of a car. If it becomes as popular as Chubby Checker’s music, we could eliminate dooring and save so many lives!

New York personal injury lawyers along with NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez and TLC Commissioner David Do emphasize how important it is for everyone to stay safe on the roads. Adopting this simple move could really change things around for everyone. Plus, DOT is working on expanding protected bike lanes to help prevent dooring even more.

The Dutch Reach: A Time-Tested Solution

This lifesaving method is also known as the “Dutch Reach,” and it’s been a thing in the Netherlands for, like, 50 years! They even teach it to kids from a young age, according to Dutchreach.org. So, it’s definitely a tried-and-true technique!

Cycling on the Rise in NYC

With more New Yorkers biking than ever before, it’s super important to keep everyone safe on the streets. The number of people biking to work has more than doubled from 2011 to 2021, and there are now over 550,000 cycling trips made in the city every day. So, let’s all do our part and twist again for safety.

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is very much on board with the city’s transformation: “We’re moving away from those gas-guzzling cars and toward a future of eco-friendly transportation. Ending dangerous ‘dooring’ is part of rethinking how we share the streets with cyclists, and I’m so excited to see the ‘twist’ become part of this new normal!”

He also gave a shoutout to the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission and Department of Transportation for joining forces with Chubby Checker to spread the message that street safety is for everyone, not just drivers. Chubby Checker Helps NYC Fight
