Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts Inc. (usually abbreviated as Electronic Arts) is an American developer and distributor of computer and video game consoles founded by Trip Hawkings. It is the first in the so-called third-party sector, a licensee to produce video game consoles for third-party companies; its headquarters are in Redwood City, California. He has studios in several cities in the United States, Canada, Japan, and England. It has several subsidiaries, such as EA Sports, in charge of sports simulators, The Sims Studio, for video games Sim and EA Play / EA Redwood Shores for other games (formerly there was EA Games), and subsidiaries acquired over time such as Maxis, among others. Electronic Arts also have the most extensive distribution globally and are based in countries as diverse as Brazil, Poland, or the Czech Republic. It is one of the few Western video game companies with its distribution in Japan.

History

Founded in 1982, it was a discreet producer of PC games; it decided to specialize in this sector with games appropriate for the medium, such as strategy and military genres. At the beginning of the 90s, it began to mass-produce sports simulators. It decided to produce for consoles, with the Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo being the silver

Dreamcast game

In the second half of the 90s, it produced many sports games strategy races for the Sony Play Station; it also made the most games for the short-lived Panasonic 3DO; it also supported Nintendo 64 somewhat more timidly and Sega Saturn. This immense production for home consoles contrasts with the few launches for portables and much less for Arcade machines in the company’s entire history.

In 1997 they acquired Maxis, a development studio led by Will Wright and creators of the SimCity franchise. After receiving the studio, they redesign SimCity 3000, achieving significant sales success. A year later, Maxis created The Sims and its seven expansions, its flagship product, and is considered the best-selling PC video game of all time. In 2004, after Maxis moved to EA headquarters in Redwood City, they released The Sims 2.

In 2005 he got the exclusive license for the NFL of North American football, he tried the same with the NBA basketball league, but this time without success; bought several companies in the sector such as the Criterion programming group and tried to buy Ubisoft, the largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, but was unsuccessful due to the refusal of its owners.

Financial Information

In fiscal 2005, EA posted revenues of $3.1 billion and produced 31 titles that sold more than a million copies, making it the most profitable company in the industry after Nintendo.

On August 15, 2007, a registered IP address belonging to EA changed their own English Wikipedia page. The changes downplayed the importance of EA founder Trip Hawkins while boosting his reputation as the company’s then-CEO Larry Probst. In addition, information on the labor scandal known as EA Spouse, triggered by an alleged humiliating treatment of the company towards its workers, was eliminated.

Company Brands

Mostly the company comprises five major labels, each with several video game development studios. These brands are:

Electronic Arts Games

This division has the most significant number of studios and video game development teams. The Electronic Arts Games imprint is responsible for creating (by studios within the division) titles and franchises such as Need for Speed, Battlefield, Dead Space, and Medal of Honor. This brand generally develops games related to action/adventure, RPG, racing, first-person shooter genres, and Play-4-free type games.

The Studios within the Ea Games Division are as follows:

  • Criterion Games (Gildford, Inglaterra).
  • EA DICE (Stockholm, Sweden).
  • Danger Close Games (Los Angeles, EEUU).
  • Visceral Games (Montreal, Canada, and Redwood Shores, USA).
  • EA Phenomic (Ingelheim, Alemania).

It also has EA Partners, a group of studios responsible for developing, publishing, and distributing services to third parties (groups of developers or video game studios outside of EA).

Currently, the group  completed up of the following studios:

  • 38 Studios.
  • Crytek.
  • Respawn Entertainment.
  • Insomniac Games.

EA Sports

This division is in charge of developing sports-related video games. Some of the best-known franchises in this division include Madden FNL, FIFA, NHL®, NBA LIVE, and NBA Jam.

Most game developments are in the following studios:

  • Canada (Burnaby, Canada).
  • Tiburon (Orlando, USA).

EA Maxis

Formerly called EA Play, it is the label in charge of developing casual games and the Sim franchise. It has created franchises such as SimCity, The Sims, and Spore.

The studies found in this division are:

  • Redwood (Redwood Shores, EEUU).
  • Salt Lake (Salt Lake City, EEUU).
  • Maxis nteractive

However this brand is mainly responsible for developing online and mobile video games. The studies that comprise it are:

  • Playfish (London, England).
  • com (Redwood Shores, USA).
  • EA Mobile.

EA BioWare

However this is the most recent division created in 2011 after EA’s internal restructuring. This division is in charge of developing multiplatform games, role-playing games, MMOs, and strategy games. The studies within this division are:

  • Edmonton (Edmonton, Canadá).
  • Montreal (Montreal, Canadá). Austin (Austin, EEUU).
  • Waystone Games
